491 Skill Work Regional (Provisional) Visa  
This is a visa for skilled individuals nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in regional Australia.

It is a provisional visa that allows skilled workers and their families to reside and work in designated regional areas of Australia for 5 years. After three years from the date of visa grant, the holders of the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) subclass 491 visa can apply for a Permanent Residence visa.

To be eligible for this visa, applicants must be nominated by:

  • An Australian state or territory government agency, or
  • Sponsored by an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area and be invited to apply for the visa after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect.

The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa consists of two streams – the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Main Applicant, and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subsequent Entrant.

You can be in or outside Australia when applying for both visa streams in Subclass 491, but not in immigration clearance.

The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Main Applicant is a provisional visa for skilled workers who desire to live and work in regional Australia.

This is a temporary visa, for a duration of up to 5 years. Holders of this visa must live, work, and study in a designated region of Australia, along with any family members. Members of the family unit can be included in the visa application.

  • Live, work, and study in a designated region of Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia multiple times while the visa is valid
  • Live in Australia for 5 years from the date of visa grant
  • Apply for permanent residence if eligible

Eligibility:

  • Be invited to apply by an Australian state or territory government agency
  • Either be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency, or indicate your sponsorship by an eligible relative
  • Be between 18 and 45 years of age
  • Score 65 points or more
  • Have at least competent English
  • Have a suitable skills assessment at the time of invitation

The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subsequent Entrant is for a family member of an individual who holds the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa.

Key features:

  • Live, work, and study in a designated region of Australia
  • Stay in Australia while the visa is valid
  • Travel to and from Australia as long as the visa is valid
  • Apply for permanent residency if eligible

Eligibility:

  • There is no age limit for this visa
  • Be one of the members of the family unit of a subclass 491 holder
  • Have functional English
